Sedation Dentistry
Millions of people in America have fears and anxieties about visiting the dentist. In some cases, dental phobias even keep them from attaining necessary dental work. Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep” dentistry, is a way for you to overcome your fears of the dentist and feel more relaxed and comfortable when you have treatment. Our dentists offer a number of sedation dentistry techniques that can put you in a very relaxed state.
Sedation dentistry techniques can reduce your fears and anxieties associated with needles, instruments, sounds, and smells commonly associated with the dentist’s office. With sedation dentistry, our dental team can alleviate your anxieties and provide you with the care you need to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Sedation dentistry options at Pomerado Cosmetic Dentistry include:
I-V Sedation
I-V sedation is typically used for more complex dental procedures and for patients who suffer from extreme dental anxiety. This technique typically puts patients in what is called a “twilight” sleep. Depending on the level of sedation administered, patients may enter a deep sleep or such a significant state of relaxation that they go in and out of sleep. Our dentists work with an experienced dental anesthesiologist who will be monitoring your progress to make sure everything is running smoothly during the procedure. It’s important to remember that you will be very groggy once the treatment is complete, and the effects of the anesthesia will take awhile to wear off – so it is necessary to arrange for someone to take you home afterward.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas” is a frequently performed dental technique that allows you to feel very relaxed during treatment. This technique will not put you to sleep; however, it is not uncommon for patients to drift into a light sleep while the procedure is performed. Nitrous oxide is breathed in through the nose, and typically takes effect after about 20 seconds. Certain medical conditions may not allow some patients from having nitrous oxide. Our dentists will talk with you more about this technique and determine if this is a good option for your needs. Patients who undergo nitrous oxide sedation typically do not experience any after-effects, and do not need an extensive recovery period before going home.
Anti-Anxiety Medication
In some cases, an anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed that patients will be advised to take either the night before their treatment or about an hour beforehand. These medications can typically help patients feel much more relaxed during treatment and achieve a more tranquil state of mind while the procedure is taking place.
